Roswell, the seat of Chaves County in southeastern New Mexico, is a retirement community surrounded by ranches and dairy farms. The nearby Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge along the Pecos River is home to many unusual and rare species indigenous to the area. Most known for the UFO incident of 1947 conducted by the Roswell Army Air Field, which actually occurred 75 miles to the north in Corona, Roswell gets a significant portion of its revenue from proceeds of the Roswell International UFO Museum & Research Center and a host of UFO-related tourist attractions. The site of the World War II prisoner of war camp in nearby Orchard Park, now called Iron Cross Park, contains an iron cross assembled from the rocks lining the North Spring River by German prisoners of war. The Roswell area is home to Eastern New Mexico University - Roswell in the town of Portales, as well as the New Mexico Military Institute prep school. Most major hotel chain franchises are represented in the Roswell area, as well as smaller lodges and ranches in the surrounding communities.
